Good evening,
As a small christmas surprise (unless you have been in the 'OS X' channel), I am announcing my project to get something like EVEMon written for the Mac OS. This is just an alpha release, and skill planning is _not_ currently available (But I am working on it), but I wanted to be able to show something for christmas.
It's just a beginning unfortunatly, but I am working on it and it goes forward quite well.
Pictures > http://ceres.doesntexist.org/ Binary > http://ceres.doesntexist.org/bin/ Source > http://ceres.doesntexist.org/src/
You can add API-Keys from the debug menu, but somehow copy/paste got messed up, so you have to right click and select paste. But if anything is unclear, just ask.
It probably only works on Leopard unfortunatly, since it is written in Obj-C 2.0, and requires the garbage collector.
Ps. It does "Phone home" to download the datadump, it is downloading 2 files, http://ceres.doesntexist.org/xml/Clones.xml and http://ceres.doesntexist.org/xml/Skills.xml. But I don't keep any statistics or anything, so if you try it please leave a message here with some ideas or thoughts, maybe ask for some feature to be implemented.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Wonderful, I didn't know you used a Mac either Srg Hedge.
And I thanks Phronesiis, I'll start adding some more features and fixing some bugs soon.
Known bugs. If you don't have an internet connection, the server status lists as 0 people. If you put your computer to sleep, updates stop. You can't paste in the API-menu thingy.

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 26/12/2008 23:29:18 Thanks,
I'll try to have a new release up for grabs sometime soon. A lot of stuff to be done around now unfortunately.
I have some more stuff working, including skill rank, attributes. Next thing will be to list what skills a character has. And count the amount of SP it has.
Ps. I want a proper portrait...

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 04/01/2009 00:14:42 I'll be home tomorrow, so I'll fix it then. Will publish a small update so it understands a new XML format too.
Mainly so I can export data directly from Sequel Pro and not have to write lots of sed.
(Ps. Maybe I shouldn't have payed my ISP, it tends to suck... but it's cheap and fast at least.)

A little later than expected, but both the hosting and a new version is ready.
The only feature that shows is that it now takes at least 3 minutes on first startup (It will look like it has crashed / is unresponsive), that is due to it now recreates a large part of the datadump on your computer. That shouldn't be so slow in a real database, but since I am using the XML Core Data backend... well... it get's really slow.
I'll probably change to the SQLite backend when all the data is in place and working.
Binary > http://ceres.doesntexist.org/bin/ Source > http://ceres.doesntexist.org/src/
It downloads some additional xml, you can check the xml directory on the server to find what it downloads. You can also find the SQL that generated the xml files there.

Thanks for all the support, and well... there will be a 0.0.3 soon. I just have to fix a small bug and I'll be done. r/small/huge/ It will fix the interface up a bit, and place some foundation for making the interface suck less. |

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 12/01/2009 01:49:31 A new version is available (0.0.3) and it should be a lot snappier(tm).
Also features larger portraits and Cmd-C works!
(Code is a bit ugly in the loading classes, sorry.)
http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/bin as usual!
Ps. If someone adds a character too much or it just fails to load the data for one reason or another remove "~/Library/Application Support/Ceres/Ceres 0.0.3.sqlite3".

YANW! (Yet another new version)
Good! 1. Almost a brand new interface. 2. You can remove characters that pollute the new goodness (Right click is a good tip).
Bad! 1. The new interface looks almost as bad as the old one. 2. I haven't really tested this to my usual standards. |

That would really be lovely, icon design isn't something I have ever done. And any input/help on the interface would really be awesome.
So if you want to help, you're more than welcome (and everyone else too.) Join osx-dev in game and maybe we can chat about some ideas.

Ceres 0.0.5!
Changelog: 1. Fixed the new Character View (Only opens one instance, doesn't leak memory anymore...) 2. Proper sorting of added Characters. Some other stuff that you won't notice unless you check the source. |

At the time I started it I was training a skill, then mid training I switched, but ceres still says I'm training the old one. Seems like it's just a simple thing of not refreshing itself, but I don't know obj-c...

No idea why, but it sounds like the load failed to finish correctly.
Can you try to remove all files in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres/ ?
I am going to look into the fragility of the loader. |

Sorry, Stick Cult, I couldn't replicate the problem with skill training. Could you be more precise when it happened, did you by any chance start the program, go into sleep mode and then change skill?
(Going into sleep mode kills the updating code for some reason.)

Originally by: Seventh Angel excellent start. Literally just installed it, and the first issues that come to mind are:
1. It adds all the characters on an account, that's just annoying. 2. Stick a link to the api key page on that Add API Key page, it's a pain to look it up (I actually ended up opening evemon just to find it lol).
Does it alert you when a skill finishes? If it's possible to add skill finishing times to iCal (which in turn will sync with the iPhone ofc) then that's a route you might want to consider, it would allow you a lot of flexibility with how the alerts are treated (email, visual, audio, etc etc).
Very much looking forward to future versions, keep up the great work!
1. Yes, that is a bit annoying yes. But you can remove the extra characters at least. (Will fix) 2. That is a great idea, I'll definatly look into it. Since that sounds awesome. |

Originally by: Nadoun Looks like a great start from the screenshots. I installed .5 and it hangs at 'loading data (0/5 files downloaded)' so I attempted to switch back to .4 and have the same results. No errors in either case and still seems responsive - however I left it sit for a significant amount of time, an hour or two, and it never budged. I also deleted the sqlite3 file to no avail. Perhaps I'll delve your code a bit and see where it's trying to look.
That is odd, I'll try to look into what it can be too. But it should have timed out long before that. (30 secs iirc.)

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 25/01/2009 12:11:43 Only thing I can think of is that you're running Tiger (I haven't found a way to make it fail gracefully yet.)
If that is not the case, could you send the entries from the console log? They might include something useful.
And if you have XCode installed (as implied), then you could try to compile the latest version yourself, that might give some more information.
Mental note to self: Ship with debug symbols so these errors include some more information. |

I really like the iCal integration suggestion, though it's probably a bit too early to inundate you with feature requests. :) I have absolutely zero coding knowledge, but if there's anything I can do to help out, just give me a shout.
Almost everyone can do what is probably *the* most important part, testing. Or maybe the other important (but for me a lot harder) thing, having good/bad/awesome/sucky ideas. Anything goes, it just might take a while for it to get implemented, but I promise to read and reflect on any idea.
If anyone manages to crash it in any way, then it would be awesome if you could send me the relevant files in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter (Anything with Ceres in it's name) and if you know a way to reproduce it, that would help a lot too. |

0.0.6, 6 might not be a prime... but it's the number of the new version!
Growl support! Calculates skillpoints, quite accurately too. (More accurate than EVE at least, which is good enough for now.) Requires leopard (Now gives a cryptic message instead of just a core dump, I think...) Sends events for various reasons, doesn't really affect anything visible, but I wanted to add it to the list.
And I lost the list of other things, but it is probably a bit better in several ways...

Originally by: KW Mech Looking good! Mine stayed on an old skill when I changed the skill part way through, as well. Deleting the files in the Ceres library also forced me to reinstall my API info ( a bit of a PITA ). Keep up the good work though.
Wonderful,
I'll check into why the skill change mechanics works for me but not for some others. (It takes around 15 minutes to change, due to CCP:s cache timer)
About the database, yes. If you remove it, then all the API info is gone (via design, since it keeps all data focused, and allows a quick reset if something goes wrong.)
But you shouldn't have to touch it unless there is a bug that corrupts the data really, but we'll have to wait a bit before I say Ceres is free from those.
Edit: If someone can't generate a database for any reason, but want to test anyhow. Download a pre-generated database from http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/db and drop it in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres |

Fixed (a few) bugs. Learning skills now counts for attributes. Sparkle auto-updater. (I hope it works too...) Double click on a character now opens the info window. The API window opens on load (if there are no characters).

No, you shouldn't. But it sounds like Ceres for some reason can't connect to download the datafiles.
One other person had the same problem, but I don't really know how to fix it yet. I will try to think about it, since it sounds like a bug...

Is where mine freezes on loading, possibly an issue with your server.
edit: is it possible to ship a binary with the xml files included. Otherwise can you use a more robust protocol to fetch the files (wget maybe?).
Ok, that's where I guessed.
It probably won't work (Since you still need to connect to the CCP servers, and that uses the same code), but you can download a database from http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/db and put it in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres
About wget, that won't be any difference (and wget isn't included in OS X, but the same argument works for curl). Both use http, the difference is that NSURLConnection (the method I use) respects OS X settings for proxies and also allows for more control, and has an Objective C API. |

Yes, it's quite odd that they removed wget (even though I prefer curl. But it's not like it's eating up much space or anything.) I come from a unix/linux background myself and tend to have a few scripts lying around doing these kinds of things.
The callstack implies that it can't find the version of the database ([Ceres version] is only one line, so the full dump shouldn't be necissary), which I guess means that the database isn't portable between computers (I have no idea why, really, a design decision of Apple's?).
I really appreciate you testing this, because I was thinking of distributing the database with the application to remove the necessity of downloading all the xml files.
The sqlite database includes a bit of binary metadata (in the table Z_Metadata) and I guess that is the cause of this problem.
I am going to look through the downloading code this afternoon, because something must be mildly odd with it...

About the iPhone port, sorry,
But the problem is that iPhone doesn't support neither Core Data nor Garbage Collection right now. So unfortunatly would porting it would be about as hard as writing something from scratch.
But when Apple ports Core Data and updates the ObjC runtime on the iPhone, then it would just be the case of writing a new UI. |

Nope,
I wouldn't hold my breath either, but it's definatly a possibility considering it's "the" persistence framework on OS X and there are no real technical problems doing it.
The garbage collector might be tougher actually, since there would be memory usage implications.

Also, should the API window close once the characters have been successfully added? Currently it just sits open and there's no "close" button (except for the red window one).
Another thing, if I hit "add" again with the same API key, it just adds the same 3 characters again. Perhaps a check on existing characters to stop duplicates?
The not closing is a feature (or at least I think so), since it helps when adding more than one account.
Duplicate checking is a good thing to add, yes.

Err, no... or it shouldn't show up as (null) but the type of clone you have and how much SP it stores.
I definately have a clone, but it's not showing up there.
Also, a skill summary at the top of the character page would be nice. Something like:
125 known skills 48 Skills at level 5
Could you try to right click on your character, and select invalidate cache?
Or if that doesn't work, delete the database. It might have been corrupted by the buggy version.

It includes a host of awesome features including:
Fixed the SP/hour problem. You can no longer add duplicate characters. Nicer Portraits (Notice the rounded edges). Shows amount of known skill, and the number on level 5. Grouping of skills in the list.
Some more probably, but I am too lazy to look at the commit logs.

But I am working on it, might take a while before it is ready though.

Preferably written near the character names on the main screen, and big enough to be seen rapidly... The end date is an important information, but I find the remaining time more useful, especially for short skills!
I am adding an option for it (replacing the completion date) in the next release, probably as default.

No idea actually, anyone knows if this is going to have any implications for the api? It might just appear as if the player swapped the skill manually...
Those who live on march 10th will see I guess...

"Apocrypha." God help us all if the release is Chribba-themed. We'll all be mining veld in dreads.
Themed? No way Linkage
Hm... I was right then... odd, I tend to spell bad. ;)
So does Apochribba add some mining related bonuses on the revelation..? Hm... but does it really matter in the end, *everybody* loves the Veldnought. Bonus or no bonus.

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 17/02/2009 13:09:58 Sorry to bring the thread on topic again, but 0.0.11 just got released.
New awesome features include.
Fixed a bug causing multiple notifications for skill training completed. Shows rank in skill list. Loader now uses (Processors + 1) threads instead of 2. Now sure all core data calls are from the main thread. Fix bug when training the same skill twice in a row. Group cells in the skill list now shows skillpoints and amount of skills. Fixed some skill level issues. Preferences Window. Skill training format option (Absolute / Relative). Skill level format option (Roman / Arabic). Character window closes if the character is removed. Removed old API-key window.
Available from http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/bin or from the auto updater.
Ps. I compensated the faster loader with loading a _lot_ more stuff... <3

If someone was running Ceres this morning during down time, you might have noticed that it doesn't really show anything useful anymore.
Remove the bugged characters and re-add them.
OR
You either need to restore your database (Remove the Ceres.sqlite3 in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres, and optionally rename one of the old databases to Ceres.sqlite3)
Sorry, I think I have fixed it now.

It is 512x512 px indeed. There is a little app called img2icns. It converts any image in an macosx icns resource. Don't have the link right now, sorry.
Icon Composer seems to work, it's included with the dev tools on the Mac OS DVD. (/Developer/Applications/Utilites/Icon Composer)

I have a few comments from a user perspective since I gather you are looking for input during the beta. The (auto) update from 11 to 12 went without a hitch.
This is just a laundry list of ideas, I know you don't get paid for this, and its great so far. Higher priority on top: - Icon - Add version number to About page (also include your name and links to any website) - Add paypal donation link to Ceres menu (it never is much but hey, it doesn't hurt) - Save the char window location on close. i.e. x,y placement - done in 12 - Increase indention of Skills under each category - Double click on skill category name/row expands/contracts category - Hover or (left)click on skill displays skill description - Highlight partially trained skills - Follow game standard and include five boxes depending on level trained (full, blinking or empty) - Hover or (right)click on a skill shows amount of time to complete next level (if available) - Option to include trainable skills (but not owned) in list - Clone Grade highlights in red if < Total SP - A mention somewhere of what has been changed in each update (annoying I know but good for testing)
Just thought about what you currently had, will save the thoughts on Skill Planning etc for the future. Thanks for all the hard work.
Edit: one already done!
Many good points, I think.
- Icon Yes, the standard one looks quite... off.
- Add version number to About page (also include your name and links to any website) Yes, fix the about page. I'll add one to the next version-
- Add paypal donation link to Ceres menu (it never is much but hey, it doesn't hurt) No thanks, please donate me some ISK instead. It's just... well... easier (and tax reasons).
- Increase indention of Skills under each category Yes I don't really know how much though. I am also thinking of adding the same icons EVE uses too, like a yellow book for a 0-IV level skill, the brown one for a level V skill and the multi-book one for the skillgroups. Would that be good?
- Double click on skill category name/row expands/contracts category Sure, I should have fixed that one from the beginning.
- Hover or (left)click on skill displays skill description Not the next version, need to calculate prerequisites and some other things first.
- Highlight partially trained skills Yes, that is probably going to be in the next version. Would an orange gradient look good?
- Follow game standard and include five boxes depending on level trained (full, blinking or empty) Yes, I think so too. Just need to think about how I should draw it for it should look good.
- Hover or (right)click on a skill shows amount of time to complete next level (if available) Yes, maybe to all levels?
- Option to include trainable skills (but not owned) in list After I calculate prerequisites.
- Clone Grade highlights in red if < Total SP Right, should be easy I'll make sure to add that one.
- A mention somewhere of what has been changed in each update (annoying I know but good for testing) There is one, most changes are published here: http://wiki.github.com/JensNockert/ceres/todo-list (Some of the smaller changes are only available in the git log, but those tend to not be important (Quite often misspellings, fixing small bugs that I introduced but where not in the previous version etc.) It also includes a todo list for the next version.

Originally by: Hamwicho OK, I really don't have any graphic skillz beyond some image hacking, but I wanted to start off the icon development.
- This still needs a lot of work, like smoothing it out, rounded edges, making it look professional and adding the shiny mac look to it - Uses EVE Alpha Font - Image is of Ceres (dwarf planet) Wiki page
Hopefully someone with better graphic skills can assist.
I would prefer something without text, but maybe a stylized planet?

He means you can do this:
http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pref.png
:)
Ok, can fix that I guess.
Originally by: Solana Dal'Annae Edit: Something I would like to see is to have a selectable character window open when you open Ceres. Also, the initial character selection window is a bit redundant if you use the tabbed mode, so a way to start with it hidden might be useful (with a way to bring it back if you close it, as I can't seem to find one now).
Save which windows were open the last time? Does that sound like a good compromise?
Originally by: Solana Dal'Annae Finally, maybe use some form of indicator on character tabs showing which one is training? Not necessarily showing what they are training, just that they are. An idea anyway, I can see that addressed in multiple ways.
Might add that, but probably not really soon.
Originally by: Solana Dal'Annae Oh, and a bug I noticed. If you are using the Tabbed setting, and have the detailed character window active; the "Show Server Status" option is enabled and makes the tab part of the window slide in and out when you click it. Nifty feature, but I don't think it's intended to happen if you pick that particular option from the dropdown menu. :)

edit: Bit of fiddling around it turns out that your Int has collapsed. If I add the number of skillpoints the character has to the absolute value that Ceres gives me, I end up with with the equivalent of 2^31 leaving the 32th bit for the minus ;)

You can remove the database from ~/Application Support/Ceres/ in the mean time. But I can honestly say I never thought about that possibility.
You can't access the api of a character that's not in subscription?

Nope. I guess you should test for that case. And for other strage cases (reprocessed character in an otherwise still valid account, for example. Including ... all charcters reprocessed on an account and account empty). If you do not have an expired account I can provide you with the ID and key of one of the many I discontinued (creating a discontinued account is easy but would take you 14 days. Reprocessed characters, on the other hand, are less than a day on any account, even a brand new trial).
That would be lovely, could you EVE-mail me the key in game?
I don't feel like waiting 14 days to fix it really. Since it should be quite easy.

Working on it, but the skill queue integration is giving me some problems. And I am currently visiting my family, so not too much time to work on it. But I am working.

That was my guess anyway
Probably, and making it a universal binary wasn't hard. I just don't know if there were any endian issues...
If someone is interested, there is a "working skillqueue" version in git now. It's just the UI left.

Originally by: KW Mech No, works fine for me. Did you happen to delete a character from eve lately. I sent one of my alts to the trash once and Ceres kept crashing on boot. I deleted the files from the Library/Application Support/Ceres directory and let it remake the files and all was good afterwards.
I did sell off a character that I was tracking in Ceres, although I haven't deleted any in Eve.
I tried what you did, though, and deleted the DB and whatnot.
One of my characters works fine. The other one blows up Ceres as soon as I add it. There must be something in his xml that is blowing things up.
For the record, I found a fix.
I noticed that Evemon showed one of my extra-slot alts at -2m SP. She definitely had positive SP, she's never been podded at all. Then I noticed an API error popping up in outofeve, which led me to further believe that something was mucked up with the API data for this account.
So, I logged in that account, logged in the toon with the negative SP, and after DT, everything is fine again.
Oh, that's unexpected. There seems to be quite a bit of problems with the API. I should make sure it just ignores such characters.
